The Hollow’s Breath

The oppressive silence within the house was shattered by a sudden, scraping sound echoing through the dilapidated halls. Mara’s pulse thundered as she grabbed Eli’s hand, the two figures small and fragile beneath the sagging beams and peeling wallpaper. "It’s not just the house," Eli whispered, eyes wide, shimmering with tears unshed. "It’s something old, something that remembers." The air was thick with the scent of rot and something sweeter, like wildflowers from a place long dead. As they moved cautiously through the shadowed rooms, the floorboards groaned underfoot, and distant whispers grew into murmurs of warning and menace. Mara stopped, her gaze drawn to a faded portrait hanging crookedly. The woman’s eyes seemed to move, accusing. "Who lived here?" Eli asked, voice barely audible, his grip tightening on her wrist. Mara swallowed fear, stepping closer to the frame. "A family... lost to time, and to something worse." Her voice trembled. The house seemed to inhale, the cold breath brushing against their necks. A sudden slam upstairs sent them diving into the crawlspace beneath the floorboards. Heartbeats drummed loudly in the cramped darkness where the faint glow of bioluminescent fungi cast eerie, shifting shadows. "Mara," Eli whimpered, "What do we do if it finds us?" She clung to the memory of the amulet their grandmother had given her — a talisman she had dismissed until now. "We fight. Or we run. But first, we uncover the truth buried by silence and decay." The crawlspace shuddered as a dark shape moved just beyond the brittle wood slats — a whisper turning to a shriek. The house was awakening.
