Echoes in the Fog

Mara’s breath billowed in the chilling air, fog curling around the skeletal trees like ghostly fingers. She stumbled, heart pounding, the uneven dirt path swallowed beneath moss and decay. Behind her, the unrelenting howl of the forest seemed to stretch into a scream. "Mara, wait!" Her brother Eli's desperate voice cracked beyond the veil of mist. "I’m scared," she murmured under trembling lips, gripping the cracked leather strap of her satchel tighter. Every snap of twigs twisted her blood colder. The ancient house rooted in Hollow Pines was more than a relic; it was a vault of whispered curses. Shadows crawled in the corners of her vision as she pressed deeper into the labyrinth of gnarled oaks. "You said it was abandoned," Eli’s breathless question hung fragile in the damp air. Mara squared her shoulders, recalling the faded map she’d found tucked beneath old floorboards in her grandmother’s attic. "I thought so," she lied, dread pooling at the base of her spine. The rusty gate groaned open before her, revealing walls smothered in ivy and windows like blind eyes. The smell of mold and forgotten tears hit her as she stepped inside. "Listen!" Eli’s voice cracked again. A faint murmur, a child's laugh, or perhaps a scream, echoed from the shadows. "We shouldn’t be here," she said, heart racing as the door slammed shut behind them. The house breathed around them — alive, hungry, waiting. "Do you hear that?" Eli clutched her arm. A whisper skittered through the floorboards, chilling, ancient. As the darkness thickened, Mara realized they were not alone. Something watched. Something beyond human. And it was coming for them.
