Beneath the Surface

Thunder rumbled low as Lila and Mark approached the old well behind the Miller house, moonlight turned to ash by gathering storm clouds. "This is it," Mark said, voice taut with dread. "The last place Rachel was seen—and where the disappearances began." Their flashlights pierced the inky darkness, slicing through creeping ivy and shattered stones. The air was damp, pulsing with a scent of rot and something metallic. Suddenly, Lila’s foot caught on a hidden root, sending her sprawling—her hand brushing cold, slick stone. Gazing down into the well, an unbearable chill stole her breath. A faint glow pulsed from below, a heartbeat in the dark. "We have to see," she whispered, eyes wide with terror and resolve. They lowered a camera attached to a rope into the abyss, the light revealing writhing shadows and something unmistakably alive. A pale hand snapped upward, grasping at the falling rope. "No!" Mark cried, jerking it back, but the weight pulled hard, dragging them toward a nightmare they couldn’t escape. Suddenly, voices echoed from the house—desperate, pleading. Betrayal unraveling: someone had led them here, someone who needed the darkness to win. Lila’s heart hammered as she realized the truth—someone was watching, waiting, ready to sacrifice them to the evil lurking beneath Hollow Creek. The rope snapped, plunging mostly into silence. And then—a whisper: "Choose... survival or the secret."
