Lila awoke to the metallic taste of fear clinging to her tongue. The memories of last night were tangled in shadows, fragmented glances of a face, a warning, the chilling laughter. She sat up, her fingers brushing the cradle of a fresh bruise on her arm. "You don't remember?" Mark was already up, packing a bag with trembling hands. "I saw it again—the woman in white. She’s bound to that place." The diner smelled of burnt coffee and stale fears as they huddled in a booth, voices lowered amidst the clatter of late-night patrons. "Everyone in Hollow Creek knows the legend," Mark said, eyes darting to the window. "Rachel Miller died here over fifty years ago. They say her spirit still wanders, looking for her child." Lila shivered. "But it's been decades. Why now?" "Because," Mark whispered, voice breaking, "the creek’s been rising, washing secrets to the surface. And something’s waking up beneath the town." Memories clawed back: whispered prayers, cold fingers brushing her skin, the creak beneath the floor. "We have to find out the truth," Lila said, determination locking her jaw. The only way forward was back to the Miller house. As they left, a black cat crossed their path, eyes glinting with ominous knowledge. The night deepened, breathless and waiting. What horrors lay buried in Hollow Creek’s dark heart, and would they survive exposure?
