Chapter 2
Secrets Beneath the Canopy
The canopy above was a patchwork of shadows and whispering leaves as Mara and Jonah navigated deeper into the forbidden jungle. Every step seemed to echo with the ghosts of the past expedition—its secrets pressing down as heavily as the humid air.
Jonah hesitated at a crumbling stone altar, voice trembling. "Could this be what the journals meant? The place they hid the artifact?"
Mara knelt, brushing centuries of moss aside, revealing an intricate carving pulsing with an eerie glow. "It’s more than just stone," she murmured, tracing the ancient symbols. "Someone wanted this to be found... or protected."
Her thoughts were interrupted by a sudden rustle. "We're not alone," Jonah said sharply. Fingers tightening around his rifle. The eyes watching them from the foliage belonged to an unseen enemy—one who knew the jungle’s secrets far better than they did.
Tension snapped like a live wire. Mara whispered harsh commands, drawing Jonah back into the shadows. "We need to move—now."
As they retreated under the suffocating green, Mara’s mind raced. What betrayal had doomed the original team? And who was hunting them in the labyrinth of vines and shadows? The jungle’s silence held all the answers, but speaking them could mean death.
Suddenly, a deafening crack split the air—the ground beneath Mara's feet gave way.
