The rain slapped hard against the window, thunder scraping the edges of the night like fingernails on glass. Elara Quinn leaned close, the fractured voice on the other end of the line barely audible, fraying in panic. "He's gone... vanished," the caller gasped, a faint sob threading beneath the words. Elara’s teeth ground tight as the world outside blurred into a dark smear of wet asphalt and neon reflections. The city, usually a cacophony of restless life, was hushed under the storm’s heavy hand. Her fingers drummed a sharp rhythm against the receiver, tension coiling in her skull. "Tell me everything," she demanded, a whisper yet steel-edged. The room smelled of old coffee and damp paper, the flicker from a lone desk lamp casting elongated shadows across her cluttered office. "You don’t understand," the voice cracked, shaking. "He left without a trace... no note, no calls, nothing." Elara jabbed buttons, pulling up files, the chilling pattern of disappearances warming under her fingertips. Fifty shades of alarm tightened the knot in her gut as she glimpsed the last photo — a smiling man, eyes wide with secret dread. Suddenly, the power fizzled, plunging the room into ink-black silence, broken only by the distant wail of sirens. "Elara," the voice whispered again, trembling. "They’re watching." She froze, heart hammering, as a slow, deliberate knock crept from the dark corridor — three knocks, pause, then two. A coded message. Danger wasn’t just near. It was inside.
