Echoes in the Mist

Rain slapped against the cracked windowpane as Maya jerked awake, the echo of a scream still tangled in her throat. She gasped, heart hammering, the cold sweat clinging to her lashes making the tiny hairs itch under her skin. Outside, the ancient pines creaked and groaned under the weight of the storm, each gust a whispered sigh of memories long buried. "Maya!" a voice shattered the quiet, hoarse and urgent. "They're coming!" Trembling fingers fumbled for the flashlight on the bedside table. The beam cut a trembling path through the fog that clung to the small, dilapidated house she’d inherited — a relic from her father's forgotten past. The air was thick with the damp, musky scent of pine needles and decay, the smell clawing its way inside her lungs. Footsteps on the porch, heavy and deliberate. The porch creaked beneath the weight of a shadow shifting just beyond the door’s weak glow. "Who’s there?" Maya’s voice cracked, the words barely more than a breath. No answer. Just the suffocating silence pressing in. Her hands shook as the door suddenly burst inward, splinters flying. "Run!" whispered the voice again, this time closer, desperate. In the flash of the lightning, she saw him — her childhood friend Cal, eyes wild, drenched in mud and terror. "What is happening?" she demanded. "The woods... they’re alive. They know we're here." A deep growl rumbled in the distance, a sound more beast than earth. Maya’s blood ran cold as shadows danced grotesquely among the trees, moving closer with each heartbeat. "They want the whispers," Cal gasped, clutching her arm. "The whispered secrets you were warned never to uncover." Before she could respond, a low, grating voice echoed behind them: "You shouldn’t have come back, Maya." The last thing she saw before the darkness swallowed her was the glint of hungry eyes in the storm. [End of chapter cliffhanger]
