Embers in the Shadowed Glade

Smoke curled around Liora’s fingers as she knelt by the dying embers of their fire, eyes scanning the dark woods for any signs of pursuit. Her breath came in ragged bursts, sweat mingling with the dirt on her brow. Tarn sat opposite, sharpening his blade with a steady rhythm that betrayed his tension. "We can't keep running," Liora murmured, voice low but fierce. "That shadow was an omen—something ancient, bound to the curse." Tarn’s jaw tightened. "The villagers say the Verdant Veil's magic runs deep, but even that can't hold back what's coming. We need allies." A rustle startled them both. Liora spun, dagger drawn, to see the stranger from the glade step into the flickering light. "You survived," he said, eyes reflecting the fire. "I’ve come with knowledge, but it comes at a price." "Speak," Liora demanded. He paused, then spoke with a weight that settled over the clearing like mist. "The Song you seek is not just lost—it’s forbidden, sealed away because its power can corrupt even the purest heart. To wield it, one must sacrifice what they hold dear." Liora’s gaze dropped to the amulet resting against her chest. "I have nothing left to lose." "But everything to risk," he countered. "The curse didn’t begin today. It’s tied to your lineage. You are the last of the Veilbound, and only you can sever its grasp." A sudden howl pierced the night, cold and desperate. Tarn stood, eyes blazing. "Then we move at dawn. No more hiding." Liora clenched her fists, feeling the weight of fate pressing down. "If the curse is within me, then perhaps the forest’s whispers aren’t just warnings—they’re a call." The stranger nodded. "Prepare yourself. The line between enemy and ally will blur, and betrayal waits in places you least expect." The fire flickered, casting long shadows as the night deepened. Somewhere beyond the trees, unseen eyes watched and waited. A single question remained: could Liora face the darkness both around and within before it consumed everything she loved?
