Steel clanged against stone as Aria dodged the sharp strike, breath ragged in the cold night air. Her heart hammered louder than the clashing blades; every nerve screamed danger. ‘You can’t hide forever,’ a voice hissed from the shadows. The faint stench of iron and smoke filled her nostrils, mixing with the bitter tang of rain on her skin. 'Then I won’t,' she whispered, eyes darting through the gloom. Suddenly, a violent gust tore through the alley, rattling broken shutters and sending loose stones skittering across the cobblestones. ‘Aria, behind you!’ a low warning cut through the chaos. She spun, sword raised, just as a dark figure lunged. Time slowed — a slam of pain on her shoulder, fire spreading through her arm, yet her blade met flesh with a scream of metal. The enemy faltered, but only for a heartbeat. A second assailant appeared, eyes gleaming with cruel intent. ‘Why are you here?’ Aria gasped, wrestling pain and determination, ‘This city carries too many secrets that should stay buried.’ ‘Secrets don’t stay hidden forever,’ came the reply, voice cold as death itself. The relentless rain began to fall, water dripping from her hair and slick cloak. Somewhere, a bell tolled mournfully, marking the hour and her dwindling chances.
