Under a moonless sky, the forest loomed like a dark ocean, each tree a towering wave frozen in place. Lila’s breath came out in short, misty bursts as she crept through the underbrush, branches snapping underfoot. The cold seeped through her jacket, prickling her skin. "I shouldn’t be here," she whispered, but the thrill edged her voice. Up ahead, a faint rustling stirred the silence. "Who's there?" Lila’s voice cracked as the wind carried distant whispers, words half-heard and unsettlingly close. She clutched the pendant around her neck, feeling its cold metal bite into her palm. A sudden, sharp crack of a branch behind her spun her around. There, glowing faintly through the haze, were two eyes—too large, too still. Panic surged as something cold and clawed brushed her arm. "No!" she screamed, but the forest’s whispers grew louder, engulfing her in darkness. A sudden scream tore the night apart. And then, nothing but night.
