Chapter 1
The Vanishing at Hollow Bay
The dense fog clawed at Iris Monroe's coat as she sprinted toward the shoreline. Her breath hitched in the cold, salty air; the eerie silence was broken only by the faint ripple of waves lapping against the rocks. "They say no one's ever come back from Hollow Bay once the fog rolls in," a rasping voice whispered behind her. Spinning, Iris faced the old fisherman, eyes gleaming with urgent warning. "But I have to find Claire," Iris said, her voice trembling but firm. Claire, a young journalist and Iris’s closest friend, had vanished without a trace three days ago— swallowed up by the thick fog that had blanketed the town. The town of Grayhaven had people who whispered about curses and old wounds, stories passed down in muffled undertones. Iris wasn't one for superstition, but the growing unease curling in her gut was impossible to ignore. She reached the edge of the bay where the water shimmered ghostly silver under the dim light of a distant lighthouse. Something glinted beneath the surface—a torn piece of fabric clinging to a jagged rock. Iris’s fingers trembled as she retrieved it: Claire’s scarf. “Why now?” she muttered, swallowing the dry lump in her throat. She scanned the darkness beyond, heart pounding as shapes shifted in the mist—figures emerging but vanishing just as quickly. “I must see this through,” she vowed, calling upon every ounce of courage she had. The cold fog wrapped tighter, whispers rose on the wind, and whispers of long-buried secrets began to stir. Chapter 1 ends abruptly as Iris’s flashlight flickers and dies, plunging her into suffocating blackness, the chilling sound of footsteps drawing nearer.
