Chapter 1
Echoes in the Shadows
The cold wind howled like a living thing through the shattered stone arches of the ancient fortress. Arin clutched the tattered cloak tighter around her slender frame as she darted between the crumbling pillars, breaths sharp and ragged in the biting night air. Above her, the ebony veil of the cloud-choked sky was broken only by a few scattered stars, like watchful eyes holding secrets she dared not acknowledge.
"You don't have much time," whispered a voice, breathless and urgent, a man’s silhouette materializing from the mist. His eyes, fierce and hawk-like, scanned the darkness.
"I know," Arin replied, her voice barely above the rustle of dead leaves. "But if I’m caught..."
"Death or worse," he interrupted, gripping her arm with a strength that betrayed fear beneath the bravado. "This gift of yours can shatter empires, but it’s a curse they hunt with fire and spite."
She forced herself not to wince at the lingering ache where he touched her. "Then I will do what I must. For us all."
The faint clang of armor echoed in the distance, growing louder, closer. Shadows twisted, coming alive with the heavy tread of soldiers bearing the sigil of the King’s ruthless regime. Arin’s heart hammered against her ribs, sweat slick beneath her cloak.
"Go!" the man urged, shoving a folded map into her trembling hands. "Find the Ebony Veil. The last sanctuary lies there, beyond the Crystal Mire. Do not fail us."
Her eyes locked with his—despair and determination tangled in that human gaze. "I won’t."
A scream cut through the night, sharp as a shattered glass. The chase was upon her.
Arin burst from the shadowed ruin into a barren wasteland, the smell of damp earth and forgotten graves thick in the air. Her feet pounded the cracked stones as the soldiers’ yells closed in, a chorus of impending doom.
Suddenly, the world shuddered. A whispered chant bubbled from her lips, ancient words forgotten by all but her bloodline. The ground beneath the pursuers ruptured, serpentine roots bursting forth to entangle and root them fast.
"Run!" she gasped, pain and power surging together.
But as she fled, the piercing agony of betrayal sliced through her side—a dagger, cold and cruel.
Arin stumbled, gaze locking with a familiar face in the crowd of enemies, eyes glittering with cruel delight.
"You cannot hide your truth, heir of shadows," the voice hissed. "Your secrets will drown us all."
And with that, darkness swallowed her whole.
