Chapter 2

Echoes of Forgotten Faces

Cold sweat soaked into Nora’s shirt as she awoke beneath the towering pines, the night thick and suffocating. The echo of her scream still lingered, a haunting reminder of what she’d barely survived. Cole was nowhere in sight. She struggled to her feet, every limb heavy, her heart pounding a frantic rhythm against her ribs. The forest around her seemed to whisper—soft voices carried on the wind, like mournful sighs. Stumbling forward, she spotted a clearing bathed in sickly moonlight. Shadows flitted at the edge, faces twisted in agony pressed against the bark. Had she dreamed them? Or was the forest showing its prisoners? A voice jarred her from the trance. "You can’t trust the pines," it said, rough and gravelly. A man stepped out, weathered and wary, eyes sharp. "Who are you?" "Name’s Harrow. I've wandered this cursed patch longer than I'd care to admit. You’re lucky to be alive, but luck here is just a shadow. Nora swallowed her fear. "Where’s Cole?" Harrow’s gaze darkened. "Lost. Taken. The Pines don't just swallow bodies—they steal souls." Suddenly, a twig snapped, and all froze. From the thicket emerged a figure, impossible to place between man and beast. Its eyes, glowing faintly red, pierced the gloom. "Run!" Harrow shouted, grabbing Nora’s arm. They plunged into the thicket, thorns ripping at skin, branches slashing faces. The thing pursued, relentless, a nightmare stitched from shadow and whispered curses. Nora’s lungs burned; her mind screamed. She grasped Harrow’s hand tighter, the ruthless forest and its horrors closing in.
