Chapter 1

Fog Over Hollow Creek

Chapter ListNext
The fog clung thick and heavy over the abandoned town of Hollow Creek, muffling every sound except the distant drip of water from cracked gutters and the faint rustling of dead leaves caught in the wind. Detective Elara Quinn’s breath came in sharp bursts, just visible in the chill air as she crouched beside the broken fence overlooking the edge of the creek bed. The soft glow of her flashlight swept over the muddy ground where a single set of footprints disappeared beneath the murky water. "You sure this is the right place?" murmured Jonah, her partner, voice low, eyes scanning the shadows. Elara didn’t answer, swallowed hard, her fingers tightening on the handle of her flashlight. "I found phone records placing her here," she whispered, voice barely audible over the eerie silence. "And the call was at midnight, right when the fog rolled in." A sudden snapping of a twig made both tense, their senses sharpening instantly. The oppressive fog seemed to thicken, wrapping around them like a shroud. The distant hoot of an owl echoed, a bleak soundtrack to the night's grim task. "This town hides more than old secrets, Jonah," Elara said, her gaze piercing through the gloom. "And someone wants them buried deep." Jonah nodded slowly, stepping closer. "We’re not just hunting a killer. We’re running against time… and shadows from the past." Before Elara could respond, a faint glimmer caught her eye beneath the water’s surface — a broken locket, half-buried in the mud. She knelt, heart hammering, and reached in. The cold water sent a shiver up her arm as she pulled it free. "This... this belonged to her," Elara breathed, recognizing the engraving barely visible beneath the grime. Suddenly, a chilling breeze swept through the trees, and a low, guttural growl echoed somewhere in the darkness. Both froze, ears straining to catch the sound again. "Did you hear that?" Jonah whispered. Before she could answer, footsteps—rapid and uneven—crunched through the underbrush, closing in fast. "Run!" Elara shouted, grabbing Jonah’s arm as a figure burst through the fog, knocking them to the muddy ground. Pain exploded in her side as darkness swallowed her vision. When she came to, silence had returned. And with it, the haunting questions: Who attacked them? What secrets did the fog hide? And was the locket the key… or the curse?
