Chapter 1

Midnight Disappearances

The cold rain sluiced down the narrow alleys of Alder Street, shimmering streetlights casting distorted reflections on slick cobblestones. Detective Lena Crow crouched low, her breath fogging in the damp air as she examined the faintest trace of crimson on the cracked pavement. "It all started with the silence," she murmured, fingers tracing the wet outline. Her partner, Martinez, shifted uneasily behind her, eyes darting over the shadows like hunted prey. "That’s the third disappearance this month, Lena," he whispered, voice thick with dread. "No witnesses, no bodies." The eerie rustle of distant footsteps made them both freeze. A figure emerged — tall, cloaked, steps uncertain. "Stop!" Lena shouted, her gun raised, but the stranger vanished into a back door before she could react. Inside the dimly lit bar, murmurs rose and fell like waves. The air was thick with the scent of stale liquor and worn leather. Lena’s sharp gaze caught a trembling waitress who quickly averted her eyes. "You know something," Lena said softly, sliding a photo across the counter. The waitress’s hands shook as she reached to touch the image — a smiling face, now lost. "They don’t want you poking around, detective," she warned, voice barely a whisper. "Alder isn’t just streets and buildings — it’s secrets, buried deep beneath the pavement." Suddenly, a thunderous crash from the back room jolted Lena into action. Shots rang out, a desperate struggle. The room went cold, silence shattered — but the mystery only deepened. Was the stranger a ghost from Alder’s past, or a harbinger of something darker? Lena’s heart pounded fiercely as she realized this case wasn’t just about missing people, but about survival in a city that whispered lies and betrayal at every corner.
