Chapter 1
Crossing the Forbidden Ridge
Thunder cracked like a whip across the storm-darkened sky as Mara Quinn scrambled up the slick, rocky ridge. Her breath came in ragged gasps, each inhale sharp and cold, the taste of wet earth and pine thick in her mouth. The wind howled, tugging at her worn leather jacket, urging her to turn back. But Mara’s eyes were fixed ahead, on the jagged silhouette of the ancient stone gate half-buried in mist – the Veil beyond which lay the lost Valley of Shadows.
"Mara, wait!" The shout sliced through the tempest, desperate and frantic. She didn’t dare stop; footsteps pounded behind her, wet leaves slapping against boots, matching her heart's frantic rhythm.
"You can’t go in there alone," her brother’s voice cracked with fear and fury as he caught up. "This territory isn’t just forbidden, it's cursed. You know what happened to Pa!"
She glanced back, eyes blazing defiance. "If I don’t find the Meridian Stone, the whole settlement’s doomed. I'm not letting his death be in vain."
The gate’s ancient carvings seemed to ripple with a strange light, and the air hummed with quiet menace. A scent—not quite earth, not quite metal—slithered through the mist, and Mara’s skin prickled with unease.
"Then I’m coming with you," her brother announced, stepping beside her.
Together, they crossed threshold and vanished into the unknown...
(To be continued with detailed exploration of the Veil, tension between siblings, rising threat of rival seekers, vivid sensory details of the treacherous landscape, and ending with the discovery of a cryptic symbol carved in glowing runes that pulses beneath Mara's touch, hinting at a deeper mystery — cliffhanger: What power awakens with the touch?)
