A Whisper in the Fog

The wind howled through the narrow alleys of Shadow City, carrying with it a whisper that raised the hairs on Mara Wells' neck. She crouched behind a rusted dumpster, pulling her coat tighter against the cold. Her breath fogged in the air as she scanned the dark street, the faint glow of neon signs flickering through the thick fog. Somewhere nearby, footsteps echoed—steady, deliberate. "Mara," a voice hissed in her earpiece, "you’re not alone. They’re closing in." She swallowed hard, her fingers tightening around the cool metal of her pistol. Suddenly, a shadow moved—a figure darting from behind a lamppost. "Show yourself!" Mara commanded, her voice sharp, urgent. The figure hesitated, then stepped forward, hands raised. "You don’t know who’s after you," the stranger whispered, eyes wide with fear. "But it’s bigger than both of us. And it’s coming." Thunder rumbled overhead as the first drops of rain fell, aggressive and cold. In that moment, Mara realized the city’s shadows hid more than secrets—they hid death. And she was right in its path.
