Whispers Beneath the Canopy

Drenched and gasping, Maia followed the stranger deeper into the labyrinth of towering trees. The air was thick with the scent of wet earth and pine resin, every step muffled by the soggy forest floor. Moonlight struggled through the dense leaves, casting phantom shapes that danced just beyond the edge of vision. "Who are you?" Maia demanded, her voice sharp despite the shiver that ran down her spine. "Call me Rafe," he replied, eyes scanning the darkness. "I'm here for the runes... just like you." "What do you know about them?" He paused, then reached into his jacket, producing a map scrawled with cryptic symbols. "Legends say the runes were carved by a forgotten tribe, guardians of a power that could reshape worlds. But many who sought it vanished without a trace." A rustle nearby made them freeze. From the shadows emerged a wolf, its eyes glowing an unnatural blue. Rafe stepped protectively in front of Maia, whispering a word in a language Maia had never heard. The wolf's growl faded into a low whine before it slinked away. "Magic," Maia breathed, awestruck and terrified. "This isn't just an adventure. It's survival." The weight of the rune stone pulsed in her pocket, a reminder that the secrets buried beneath the canopy were more dangerous than she ever imagined. But the night had only just begun, and the forest had many more whispers to reveal. As dawn threatened, a shadow pulled at Maia's past—a betrayal she never saw coming. Would she trust Rafe, or was he the next ghost vanishing into the wild?
