Chapter 1
Fractured Signals
The neon lights flickered erratically above the narrow alley as Maya sprinted, heart hammering against her ribs like a frantic drum. Behind her, the sharp clang of footsteps echoed — relentless, unyielding. She didn't dare glance back. Not now. Not when the fragments of her stolen memories tangled cruelly with shadowy threats that lurked in every corner.
"Stop! You don't want to do this," a voice hissed in the darkness, but Maya ducked beneath a broken sign, the acrid smell of burnt wire singeing her nostrils. Her fingers numb, she clutched the data shard—a sliver of forbidden truth she could barely comprehend yet knew would cost her everything.
"Maya!" The voice grew louder—urgent, pleading. Her breath caught as a figure emerged from the haze, the wet pavement reflecting the cold glow of synthetic advertisements. "You have to trust me. The Corp is after you, but this," he held up a flickering holo-device, "is the key to exposing their lies."
She hesitated, the weight of countless betrayals pressing against her chest. "Why me?"
A flicker of sorrow crossed the stranger’s face. "Because your past is more connected to the Neon Veil than you realize."
Voices closed in — cold, merciless — as footsteps thundered nearer. Maya’s gut twisted with dread. The city’s hum seemed to dim, swallowed by an oppressive silence that screamed of impending doom.
Her mind raced. The shard pulsed softly in her palm, a beacon of hope or a harbinger of destruction? One choice now stood between fleeing into the night or confronting the echoes of what the Corporations wanted buried forever.
A sudden blinding light exploded nearby. Maya shielded her eyes, heart pounding, as the world tilted dangerously.
And then, nothing but darkness.
