The rain lashed against the cockpit as Jax twisted the controls, heart pounding in sync with the flickering neon below. Explosions rocked the skyline — enemy drones swarmed, their red eyes piercing the storm. "Hold tight," she hissed into the comm. Her fingers danced with desperate precision across the panel; one wrong move and the fragile thread between life and oblivion would snap. "They’re everywhere, Jax!" crackled Thorne’s voice, tension razor-sharp. Jax bit back a curse, spotting the shattered remnants of the old city beneath — a haunting graveyard where dreams went to die. Suddenly, a missile screamed past her ship’s hull, igniting a fiery bloom. The cockpit shuddered violently. Blood sprayed as glass fragmented, slicing through her arm. Pain radiated, but adrenaline numbed it, pushing her forward. "Can you see the Abyss?" Thorne’s voice now carried something darker. "It’s not just a city," she breathed through gritted teeth. "It’s a trap." Below, towering skyscrapers stabbed the sky, glowing veins of neon blue and pink pulsing like living things. The scent of ozone and burning metal filled the air, interspersed with the acrid bite of sirens wailing. Jax’s eyes flicked to the radar — fast-moving contacts converging. Ambush. No escape in sight. "I’m cutting through the old industrial sector," she said, voice steadier than she felt. "If we can make the docks, there might be a way out." Thorne grunted affirmatively. "Just don’t let them get inside the shield." Jax plunged deeper, the roar of engines drowned by the deafening chaos around her. Every heartbeat was a countdown to oblivion. Suddenly, the ship's systems blinked — warning lights flared. "Hull breach on the port side," Jax spat the words, fingers flying. "Seal it now!" Smoke billowed, choking off visibility. Through the haze, something surged upward — a shadow bigger than any drone, moving with lethal grace. "We have company," she whispered, dread knotting her stomach. A colossal mech erupted from the neon mist, its eyes glowing an eerie crimson. Its massive claws reached for her ship, intent clear and cruel. Jax’s breath hitched. There it was — the echo from the abyss, a nightmare made real. "Thorne, get ready to jump. This is going to get messy," she said, voice trembling. The mech slammed into her ship, metal grinding, sparks flying. Alarms blared warnings of imminent failure. Desperately, Jax prepared the escape pod, the weight of every broken choice pressing down. As the cockpit shattered and fire licked the edges, she ejected — thrust out into the swirling storm. Cold wind shredded her suit, neon city lights flickered in her eyes. Landing hard on rusted metal, Jax scrambled up, heart hammering. Behind her, the mech crushed her ship with a final, earth-shaking blow. She swallowed the panic rising in her throat and set off toward the dark alleys where secrets whispered and betrayals waited. The abyss was alive — and it was watching.
