Chapter 2
Veil of Shadows
Jade woke to the acrid stench of smoke and the sharp sting of damp earth against her cheek. Pain radiated through her side, and the distant crackle of gunfire spiked her adrenaline. Disoriented, she pushed herself upright, eyes darting through the thick underbrush. Except, the jungle was gone — replaced by cold stone walls dripping with ancient moss and secrets. "You’re awake," a voice whispered, rough but familiar. She turned sharply, spotting a figure cloaked in shadows — Mara, once her ally, now a ghost from a fractured past. 'Why am I here? Where is the relic?' Jade's voice trembled. Mara’s eyes flickered with regret and warning. "They’re closer than you think. You’re hunted not just for the relic but for what you know. Trust no one, Jade."
A rustling came from the corridor. Two guards appeared, weapons drawn. "Hide," Mara hissed, pushing Jade behind a crumbling pillar. The cold stone seeped into Jade’s skin as she held her breath. Moments stretched into eternity, the tension almost unbearable. "You can fool them for now, but the shadows will catch up." Mara vanished, leaving Jade alone amid the echoes of betrayal. Outside, the distant storm raged, mirroring the turmoil inside her. Who could she trust when every ally harbored secrets? And what price would she pay to survive?
