Darkness clung to the alley as Mara ducked behind a dumpster, pulse hammering in her ears. The metallic scent of fear mingled with the faint trace of cigarette smoke. Her phone vibrated—a distorted voice crackled through, "Trust no one. Not even yourself." She pressed her back against cold bricks, sweat dampening her shirt despite the chill. The city’s heartbeat pulsed through the pavement, syncopated with the secret dread creeping up her spine. Memories flickered—half-truths and lies intertwined like thorns. "You always promised to keep me safe," the voice of her brother haunted her thoughts, drowned in betrayal. A sudden noise—a shattering bottle, footsteps—made her twist, eyes searching the shadows. "Mara!" a whisper carried on the wind, an ally or a trap? She hesitated, caught between flight and fight, the weight of survival sinking deeper with every breath.
