Chapter 1
Echoes in the Dark
The sharp crack of the door slamming echoed through the empty hallway, reverberating against the faded wallpaper. Eliza’s breath hitched as she stood frozen, the stolen letter crumpled in her trembling hand. "You promised," she whispered, voice raw, "you promised this was the truth."
Her mother’s eyes, usually calm rivers, now churned with an unfamiliar storm. "Sometimes, the truth is a lie wrapped in love," she murmured, stepping back into the shadows.
The air tasted metallic, thick with unsaid words and shattered trust. Eliza’s fingers brushed the aged wood of the banister, worn smooth by decades of secrets and silent tears. The scent of dust and forgotten memories clung to the air, making her stomach twist.
"Why would you hide this from me?" she demanded, voice breaking as tears pricked at her eyes.
"To protect you," her mother lied, though her shivering hands spoke otherwise.
Eliza swallowed hard, the letter burning a hole in her pocket. The photograph inside revealed a life she never knew—a man she never met, and a betrayal that threatened to unravel everything.
Thunder rumbled outside, rattling the fragile glass. Lightning cast fleeting shadows across the walls, illuminating the haunted silence. The house seemed to breathe around them, a witness to broken promises and lost love.
Just then, the phone rang, slicing through the tension like a blade. Eliza’s heart pounded as she snatched it up, only to hear a voice so familiar and yet so terrifying.
"It's not over," the whisper said. "I’m coming back."
She dropped the phone, breath catching in her throat. Outside, the storm raged louder, threatening to uproot the fragile peace she clung to.
The night had only just begun.
